The reason mold starts on your roof in the first place is due to a serious lack of proper roof ventilation or your home is in a shady area that blocks the sun from drying your roof properly.

Mold, Mildew, Moss and other roof fungi and other living organisms visible on the roof can invade your rooftop and the interior of your home but they can be controlled. At the rooftop, several types of organisms visibly grow to detract from the beauty of your home if left unchecked. They feed on several types of organic food and have a decent source of moisture when they flourish in the warmth on the rooftop. The three basic elements of existence, food, water, and warmth are necessary for the survival of these organisms. Usually and in any other situation around the home, an expert would claim that if one element were to be removed, the life cycle would end for these ugly life forms.

On your rooftop, however, controlling the environment can be very difficult. Introduction of poison to the equation does prove successful in most cases. Highly caustic materials are not the right answer. Simple measures for the simple organisms are best.

Copper has been known for centuries to kill mold, mildew, moss, and many slimy things. A method of inhibiting algae growth on an asphalt shingle surface exposed to varying humidity using a blend of copper-containing algae-resistant granules and non-algae-resistant granules. The copper-containing algae-resistant granules comprise a substrate granule having at least one inner ceramic coating layer comprising cuprous oxide and a seal coating having a thickness covering the inner layer.

Shingle manufacturers have caught on and offer algae resistant shingles that have either zinc or copper in the granular surfacing material. Make sure your next roof comes with a warranty on algae resistance.
